I first learned how to program lights from my AP Calculus teacher at Dana Hills High School. He led an extracurricular club called Lighting & Sound, where he taught me Hog II, general electrical design, moving light repair, and other skills necessary in production. In my teenage years, I freelanced for various production companies.
While getting my bachelor’s in applied physics from Brigham Young University, I was the lighting supervisor for my college’s special events department. My responsibilities included rigging in our 23,000-seat basketball arena as well as training a student-based crew in event lighting.
Since college, most of my work has been in live music production. My main specialty has been timecoding out pre-sequenced light shows on GrandMA2. For DJs, this is usually done by using a system called ShowKontrol that generates timecode live out of Pioneer CDJs. For other artists, timecode is usually added as an additional mono analog audio track out of their playback unit.
